Interscholastic Athletic Programs

Senior High School Programs

The primary purposes of the secondary programs are to encourage student participation, further develop student skills in specific sports, provide opportunities for the talented athlete to excel, and emphasize the further development of sportsmanship and fair play.

  • Secondary interscholastic athletics are coordinated with each other and the middle school program by the athletic director and by the varsity head coach of each sport.
  • Emphasis is on skill development in each sport.
  • Interscholastic competition at the secondary level is designed to improve athletic ability of the participants.
  • The secondary program is designed to maximize challenging competitive opportunities while encouraging participation.

The secondary game schedule should be established so as to minimize interruptions of the school day.

Middle School Programs

The primary purpose of the Middle School Programs are to encourage student participation, train students in skills related to specific sports, develop wholesome attitudes of sportsmanship and fair play.  The Middle School Program will be coordinated so that player training and development contributes to the effectiveness of a continuous sports program through the high school.

  • Middle School Interscholastic Athletics are coordinated by the athletic director and varsity head coach of each sport.
  • Emphasis is on skill development in each sport.
  • Interscholastic competition at the Middle School level is designed to improve athletic ability of the participants not as an end in itself.

The Middle School game schedule will be established so as to minimize interruptions of the school day.  The sport season at the Middle School level shall be adjusted to enable Middle School coaches to work with varsity coaches at the beginning of each season.

Interscholastic Football

The Interscholastic Football Program extends from grade seven through twelve and includes the following levels of participation:

  • Junior High
  • Junior Varsity
  • Varsity

Program Description

Middle School teams will be composed of grades seven, eight and in accordance with PIAA rules.

The Middle School program will emphasize instruction in the fundamentals of playing the game. The pressure to win will be limited and controlled at this level.

Junior Varsity and Varsity teams will be determined by the coaching staff. The schedules will be developed to provide optimum competitive levels which will stimulate skill growth of the individual athlete and the team.

Staffing Recommendations

It is recommended that the staff be compromised of one head coach and six assistant coaches (four varsity and two junior high).

Facility Utilization

Both Middle School and Varsity programs will use the practice facilities of the District. All home games will be played at Red Raider Stadium.

Interscholastic Tennis Girls

The Interscholastic Tennis program extends from grade nine through grade twelve and include the following levels of participation:

  • Varsity

Program Description

Varsity teams will be determined by the coaching staff. The schedule will be developed to provide optimum competitive levels which will stimulate skill growth of the individual athlete and teams.

Staffing Recommendations

It is recommended that the staff should be comprised of one head coach and one assistant coach.

Facility Utilization

The Tennis team will use the District tennis courts for practice and home matches.

Interscholastic Boys and Girls Soccer

The Interscholastic Soccer program extends from grade nine through grade twelve and includes the following levels of participation:

  • Varsity
  • Junior Varsity

Program Description

The varsity team will be determined by the coaching staff.

The schedule will be developed to provide optimum competitive levels which will stimulate growth of the individual athlete and team.

Staffing Recommendation

It is recommended that the Soccer staff be comprised of one head coach and one assistant coach.

Facility Utilization

The Soccer team will practice at the facilities of the Montgomery Area School District and play all home games at Red Raider Soccer Field.

Interscholastic Cheerleading

The Interscholastic Cheerleading program extends from grade seven through grade twelve and includes the following levels of participation:

  • Middle School
  • Varsity

Program Description

The Middle School squad will be selected from grades seven and eight. They will cheer at all home events for Middle School football, basketball and wrestling.  They will also cheer at away events that will be determined by the coach, building principal and athletic director.

The program will develop the participants' skill and ability in tumbling and rhythmic movement.

The squad will consist of a maximum of fourteen girls.

Varsity squads will be selected from grades nine through twelve. They will cheer for all home varsity events, football, wrestling and boys basketball.  They will also cheer at away games for the same teams and events selected jointly by the coach, high school principal and athletic director. Cheerleaders will also be required to cheer at all league championship and state playoff games for both the boys and girls teams.

The Varsity squad will consist of a maximum of fourteen members.

While the varsity cheerleaders develop skill and ability in cheer execution, they will also serve as leaders of cheers and will stimulate spectator cheering and school spirit.

Staffing Recommendations

It is recommended that cheerleading staff be comprised of one head coach for the varsity and one head coach for the junior high.

Facility Utilization

Cheerleading squads will use the Montgomery Area High School facilities.

Interscholastic Boys and Girls Basketball

The Interscholastic Basketball program extends from grade seven through grade twelve and includes the following levels of participation:

  • Middle School
  • Junior Varsity
  • Varsity

Program Description

The Middle School program will be composed of grades seven, eight and nine according to PIAA rules.

The Middle School Basketball Program will stress individual skill development and emphasize participation. The pressure to win will be limited and controlled at this level.

In an effort to maximize student participation and control the pressure of team competition, coaches should:

  • Use sound judgment in determining how long each player should play.
  • No attempt to "run-up" the score will be made.

Junior Varsity and Varsity teams will be determined by the coaching staff. The schedule will be developed to provide optimum competitive levels which will stimulate skill growth of the individual athlete and the team.

Staffing Recommendations

It is recommended that the basketball staff be comprised of one head coach and three assistant coaches.

Facility Utilization

The Basketball programs will share the facilities of the Montgomery Area School District. Practice times will be established by the athletic director and head coaches. A gym schedule will then be issued by the athletic director so as to provide equal practice time for all teams. All home varsity games will be played at the Montgomery Area Athletic/Community Center gymnasium. Middle School games will be played in the High School gymnasium.

Interscholastic Wrestling

The Interscholastic Wrestling program extends from grade seven through grade twelve and includes the following levels of participation:

  • Middle School
  • Junior Varsity
  • Varsity

Program Description

The Middle School program will consist of athletes from grade seven through grade nine according to PIAA rules.

The Middle School program will stress the development of individual skills and abilities – not winning.

Junior varsity and varsity teams will be selected by the coaching staff. The schedule will be developed to provide optimum competitive levels which will stimulate skill growth of the individual athlete.

Staffing Recommendations

It is recommended that the wrestling staff be comprised of one head coach and three assistant coaches.

Facility Utilization

The Wrestling program will use the wrestling room for all practices. A schedule of times will be developed by the athletic director and head coach. All home matches will be held in the High School gymnasium. Matches may also be held in the MACC at the discretion of the administration and athletic director.

Interscholastic Boys and Girls Track

The Interscholastic Track program is a cooperative sport with Muncy High School and extends from grade nine through grade twelve.

Level of participation

  • Varsity

Program Description

The varsity squad will be determined by the coaching staff in accordance with PIAA rules.

Staffing Recommendations

It is recommended that the track coaching staff be comprised of one head coach and three assistant coaches.

Facility Utilization

The Track team will use Red Raider Stadium for practice. In case of inclement weather the gym will be used for practice. A practice schedule will be established by the athletic director and head coach. All home meets will be held at the stadium.

Competition

The district will fund the PHAC Invitational yearly. All other invitational tournaments will be at the discretion of the head coach and funded by the track program.

Interscholastic Baseball

The Interscholastic Baseball program extends from grade nine through grade twelve and includes the following participation:

  • Varsity
  • Junior Varsity

Program Description

The varsity team will be determined by the coaching staff.

The schedule will be developed to provide optimum competition levels which stimulate skill growth of the individual athlete and the team.

It is recommended that the baseball staff be comprised of one head coach and one assistant coach.

Facility Utilization

The Baseball team will use the baseball field for both practices and all home games. The High School gymnasium may also be used for practices. A schedule will be determined by the athletic director and head coach.

Interscholastic Softball

The Interscholastic Softball program extends from grade nine through grade twelve and includes the following levels of participation:

  • Varsity
  • Junior Varsity

Program Description

The varsity team will be determined by the coaching staff.

The schedules will be developed to provide optimum competitive levels which will stimulate skill growth of the individual athlete and team.

Staffing Recommendations

It is recommended that the softball staff be comprised of one head coach and one assistant coach.

Facility Utilization

The softball team will use the softball field for both practices and all home games. The High School gymnasium may also be used. A schedule will be determined by the athletic director and head coach.

Interscholastic Golf

The Interscholastic Golf program extends from grade nine through grade twelve and includes the following levels of participation:

  • Varsity

Program Description

The varsity team will be determined by the coaching staff.

The schedules will be developed to provide optimum competitive levels which will stimulate skill growth of the individual athlete and team.

Staffing Recommendations

It is recommended that the golf staff be comprised of one head coach and one volunteer assistant coach.

Facility Utilization

The golf team will use the White Deer golf complex for both practices and all home matches.  A schedule will be determined by the athletic director and head coach.
